40k - First Game Against Grey Knights

Posted by winter on Monday, April 18. 2011 in Wargaming

I had my first game against Grey Knights on Thursday night. My opponents list was very far from optimised as he only had limited models and so all those models were blinged out as much as possible to get the points up (to 1850 at his request). The game was not particularly spectacular in any way other than my extremely crappy rolling (5 1s to wound with plasma and lascannons in 1 turn :-( ), and I was mostly using it to see how GK played and to help me come up with my own list.

Lists

He had Librarian & Inquisitor. 10 x Paladins with Halberds and Apothecary (all weapons were master crafted) in Land Raider Redeemer (with full bling). 2 x 5 man Strike Squads with halberds and incinerator with Razorback and a Calidus assassin. Everything had psy ammo.

I had 2 x Runepriests, 2 x 6 man Grey Hunters with Power Weapon, Meltagun, Rhino led by Wolf Guard with Powerfist and Combi melta, 1 x 5 man Grey Hunters in Plasback with meltagun and Wolf Guard with combiflamer, 1 x 5 man Grey Hunter in Razorback and flamer. 2 x 3 man Thunderwolf Cavalry with 2 x Stormshield and 1 x Powerfist, Landspeeder with Multi Melta and Heavy Flamer. 2 x 6 man Long Fangs pack with 5 x Missile Launcher and Plasback.

Game

My opponent was going to be in trouble if we rolled any objective missions as he had a grand total of 10 scoring guys. Of course we rolled Annihilation Pitched Battle. Bad for me and good for him. I have lots of fairly easy Kill Points.

I won the roll to setup and looking back deployed fairly poorly. I even knew in my head that my main advantage would be to outrange him, so I deployed as far forward as possible. What? Stupid... compounding my stupidity, my opponent seized the initiative and proceeded to blow away half my long fangs, reducing 1 squad to a single missile and the other squad by 2. Other than that though, not much happened. I had some luck on my first turn also wrecking his Land Raider with my Land Speeder.

The rest of the game basically consisted of me shooting his Paladins with plasma guns and lascannons along with psychic powers (Murderous Hurricane is fantastic). Final score was 6 vs 4 to me on kill points.

Thoughts

GK shooting is fantastic in the 24" zone. The game could easily have been a draw except for my opponent leaving the Land Speeder immobilised, lacking the MM but still with the Heavy Flamer and leaving the sole Long Fang from the first round alive. However, against any heavy armour, they would have struggled to even scratch the paint. The Str 8 Psyflemen really are fairly critical in a pure GK list. With henchmen you can bring a bit of melta and I am certainly tempted to do so. If I had had a Land Raider the only thing that may have been able to hurt it were meltabombs and Warp Rift.

I must remember that multi wound models must lose a whole model to instant death unless they are unique (I forgot this until the 5th turn when someone reminded me. I would have killed 3 more Paladins if I had remembered earlier). The Paladins are somewhat scary in assault but they are also easy to avoid and just shoot to death. The strike squads are largely laughable as they still need 4s and 4s against marines and with only a single attack its really not that bad facing them. My 6 strong Grey Hunters easily dispatched his 5 man squad (3 gone when they got assaulted, then they lost 1 more before wiping them out). Strike Squads are definitely shooting based.

It was an interesting game though in anything other than kill points, my opponent would have lost rather badly, so I won't be taking too many ideas from his army list ;-)

It would definitely be a laugh! Even non Paladin builds have a pretty small model count!
