Epic Painting Session

Posted by winter on Saturday, August 6. 2011 in Wargaming

Today I had an epic painting session. I'd say it was at least 6 hours! I did however get quite a lot painted!

First of all I took the Prussian Empire dreadnought from state it was in in the picture you see to the left to pretty much finished. All I have left to do now is finish off the turrets and the generators.

Dystopian Wars - FSA Battle Group Done

Posted by winter on Friday, August 5. 2011 in Wargaming

Finally put the finishing touches on my FSA bombers tonight and so now my second battle group box is done. The Federated States of America. As I've said previously, I initially didn't like the look of these ships, but they have really grown on me and now I think they look cool. Quirky, but cool.

More pics follow.

Dystopian Wars - FSA Bomber Is Missing Something...

Posted by winter on Wednesday, August 3. 2011 in Wargaming

I am finishing up my FSA battle group box and I've only got the bombers to go. You can see my progress so far and I am happy with it, especially the free hand star.

However, it is missing something and I am not sure what it is... any ideas out there?

Dystopian Wars - Second Game & FSA Impressions

Posted by winter on Tuesday, August 2. 2011 in Wargaming

Played my second game of Dystopian Wars on Sunday night and yet again I had a blast. This time around I played my Federated States of America battle group and my opponent was playing Empire of the Blazing Sun. First game for my opponent, but he had a really good grasp of the rules so everything went smoothly.

Army Transport Bag Review

Posted by winter on Friday, July 29. 2011 in Wargaming

I picked up this Army Transport Bag from The Combat Company with the intention of putting all (well hopefully all, but probably most) of my Dystopian Wars models into it.

I've purchased a number of transport options (GW cases, Battlefoam bags & foam, Minisoft foam and some stuff I built myself) so I've got some idea of the differences between the various options and have also formed some opinions of what I like and what doesn't.

Dystopian Wars - FSA Dreadnought

Posted by winter on Thursday, July 28. 2011 in Wargaming

In addition to the Prussian Dreadnought, I also picked up the FSA Dreadnought at the same time and here are a few pics along with my first impressions.

When I was first looking at Dystopian Wars I really wasn't impressed by the FSA faction. Firstly they sat low in the water and secondly they had paddle wheels! I thought that was kind of stupid. Now however I quite like them and the Dreadnought is even better than the initial releases.

OMG a non wargaming related post! As most people would be aware, the final Harry Potter film has come out and I caught it early Sunday morning with the woman.

Thoughts and numerous spoilers below.

Dystopian Wars - Prussian Dreadnought

Posted by winter on Wednesday, July 20. 2011 in Wargaming

One of the goodies that came in my package yesterday is the utterly amazing Prussian Dreadnought. This thing is huge and looks freaking awesome. I can't wait to get started painting this (though I will try and finish off the FSA battle group first).

Following are a few pics of it and some comments. As usual. click the images for a larger version.

I Love The Combat Company

Posted by winter on Tuesday, July 19. 2011 in Wargaming

I am pretty sure I've said it before, but I will say it again. I love The Combat Company! They have a great range, good prices and fantastic service. When my FSA Battleship came missing the rocket part I dropped Russ a line and he sent me out one straight away. Yesterday afternoon I placed an order for the next set of Dystopian Wars stuff I wanted (after trying oh so hard to resist. Fail.), and it arrived today! Unexpected and awesome :-D

Bought an Airbrush

Posted by winter on Thursday, July 14. 2011 in Wargaming

So I bought this airbrush today, and I've had a quick go at it. It was a disaster :-( I am guessing that the paint was still too thick and so I got a paint jam and it took a while to get that sorted out...

I will have another go at it over the weekend. I am hoping to paint my Firestorm Armada models up mostly using the airbrush as they are fairly simple models and I'm not too fussed about making a mess of them ;-) Anybody got some advice?

Dystopian Wars - Prussian Naval Battle Group

Posted by winter on Monday, July 4. 2011 in Wargaming

I finished up my Prussian Naval Battle Group Saturday evening and I am really pleased with how they have come out. These gals were a true pleasure to paint made easier by me knowing what paint scheme I wanted to go with basically from the first time I laid eyes on the models.

I have put a "matte" varnish on all the models, so they are a bit shiny, but I figure that with the amount of handling they will get, the varnish is the way to go.

Dystopian Wars - Prussian Battleship Done!

Posted by winter on Tuesday, June 28. 2011 in Wargaming

After getting the Prussian frigates done, I decided to skip ahead to the battleship and now, as you can see to the left, she's done!

I am really pleased with the way that she's come out. The dwarf bronze (which looks more like brass to me) provides a nice contrast with the blue-grey armoured areas, and the shading has come out just how I wanted it to.

Dystopian Wars - First Game Impressions

Posted by winter on Monday, June 27. 2011 in Wargaming

Played my first game of Dystopian Wars a couple of nights ago; my Prussians against some Kingdom of Brittania. Both of us were playing our first game and so not being overly familiar with the rules we stuck to the battle group box contents and had a straight up battle.

Dystopian Wars - FSA Test Frigates

Posted by winter on Thursday, June 23. 2011 in Wargaming

Whilst I am finishing up my Prussian ships (onto the Cruisers and the Battleship and making good progress), I have started thinking about colour schemes for the other nations. First up is the Federated States of America faction who have funny little steam paddlers. Initially I wasn't sold on their ships, but they are starting to grow on me.

Dystopian Wars - Prussian Frigates Done

Posted by winter on Sunday, June 19. 2011 in Wargaming

As you can see, I have finished painting up my Prussian Empire frigates. I am happy with them and they were fairly easy to paint. My only concern is that they are a bit dark overall, but with the other 3 fleets still to paint up, I don't want them all to look the same. So I could go for lighter decking on the Prussians, but that would mean that one of the other fleets will need to be a fairly light hull with dark decking and I am not sure that would look very good.
