I'm Back. So much to do!

Posted by winter on Monday, September 26. 2011 in Random

Random picture I found at http://moroccanmaryam.typepad.com/my_marrakesh/2011/05/marrakech-and-a-tale-of-the-to-do-list-that-got-away.html whilst searching for "So much to do" Got back from the holiday last Wednesday. Was fantastic, though I am almost always happy to come home. There is just something about being in my own home, sleeping in my own bed, being back with the dog and having all my geeky stuff around ;-)

And how much geeky stuff do I have! All the GenCon stuff I ordered for Malifaux and Dystopian Wars arrived, as did my Terraclips and there are a heap of awesome computer games coming out soon. I think it is time for a list.

Wintercon Haul

Posted by winter on Thursday, June 16. 2011 in Wargaming

Last weekend was Wintercon down in Canberra which looks to be set as the little brother to Cancon. There seemed to be significantly less people playing and quite a few less systems in attendance, but in some ways that is good as it allows people to play different games without having to choose. I only played in the 40k team challenge that was run on the Monday, but I'll do a post about that later.

Malifoolery One - Game One

Posted by winter on Tuesday, April 12. 2011 in Wargaming

I travelled to Sydney weekend before last to play in the Maliffolery One tournament. 3 games over one day with a 50 point list each game escalating by 5 points (25, 30, 35).

It was a very fun day, with some good games and some fantastic players. I also got to meet Lord Shaper and we managed to get in a "Lady J Off" in the final game! Unlike Cancon, instead of Neverborn, Neverborn, Neverborn, the theme of this tournament was Lady J, Lady J, Lady J. There were 3 Guild players, all of which had Lady J, Outcasts lead by Viktorias and Von Schill, Arcanists led by Rasputina and Gremlins led by Somer Jones.

Malifaux - Viktorias Sisters in Battle

Posted by winter on Friday, April 1. 2011 in Wargaming

Have been thinking about the Viktorias a little bit recently. One thing that I really can't understand is one of the options in their Sisters in Battle spell. One of the options gives +2 damage, which is excellent. Another option gives a + attack flip which is ok, but fairly situational (good for hitting Lucius though as you could then cheat). The final option gives +3 combat total once you've hit someone. Useless!

Malifaux - "Speed" Painted Judge

Posted by winter on Thursday, March 31. 2011 in Wargaming

Last night I had a go at "speed" painting Judge. Why I put the quotes around speed is that I am not sure what is generally considered fast for painting a model. I think I am a generally slow painter; Lady J probably took me around 7 hours to paint. So my speed painting is generally around 3-4 hours.

Malifoolery One Lists

Posted by winter on Wednesday, March 30. 2011 in Wargaming

Malifoolery One is coming up this weekend and I need to start thinking about lists.

The format is escalating SS sizes (25, 30, 35) coming from a pool of 50 SS. First Master is free, but subsequent Masters cost 10 SS.

At this stage I pretty much have 3 realistic options and 1 slightly unrealistic one.

Malifaux - Lady J Done

Posted by winter on Wednesday, March 30. 2011 in Wargaming

During my day off yesterday I completed my Lady J model (or as sukoto would say "The Ranga!").

I am really happy with the way she turned out. The skin in particular came off how I wanted; pale, but with subtle shading (especially happy with her left hand on the sword hilt). The blue top looks good in the light, though I could have done better on the padding on the front of her boots.

Malifaux - Rules Manual

Posted by winter on Tuesday, March 29. 2011 in Wargaming

Got back from Fiji yesterday and I must say it was fantastic. Slightly down about having to go in to work tomorrow (took an extra day off today!), but I can look forward to Malifoolery One on the weekend.

I got through the new Rules Manual whilst relaxing in a hammock and I think that is a very nice little package. The rules are nicely laid out with examples in pictures and the index at the back is fantastic.

Malifaux - Lady Justice WIP

Posted by winter on Wednesday, March 16. 2011 in Wargaming

Here is my WIP Lady Justice. Initially I found her a very frustrating model to paint, all that hair! She is however growing on me now. I am happy with her hair (yellow base coat, red + orange mix, then ogryn flesh wash and orange + yellow highlights) and also her skin. I got some fairly subtle highlighting on the skin (hard to see in the picture) that I am pleased with.

Travelling for Fun

Posted by winter on Wednesday, March 16. 2011 in Random

So now that I am back from NZ for work, I am travelling to Fiji for a couple of weeks. This time for fun :-D So again, unlikely to be any updates.

I've put the money down to go along to Malifoolery One just after I get back and I will try to convince the rabbit to play too (he has never played before), so I will have a think about what faction to play while relaxing on the beach. I've been working on Lady J (will try to post some pics this afternoon before I leave) so might give her a go. Though Ramos is also fun, I'd need a bunch of Electrical Creations and I think I'd like a Coryphee Duet in there too.

Malifaux - Ramos and the Electric Bomb

Posted by winter on Friday, March 4. 2011 in Wargaming

Edit: Ignore most of this post as the Electrical Creations are indeed Unique. Totally missed it on the stat card previously :-(

I got a game of Malifaux in last night, but after forgetting to bring the cards for Seamus and his ladies, I decided to instead use Ramos. Ramos was the 3rd box set that I bought and now that I have painted him, I was keen to give him a go. My opponent was using Marcus and had 7 Silurids. I had Ramos, the Steamborg Executioner, a Steampunk Arachnid Swam, a Steampunk Arachnid, a Mobile Toolkit and a Gunsmith.

Malifaux - Seamus Crew

Posted by winter on Wednesday, March 2. 2011 in Wargaming

The bases that I had ordered for Seamus and his ladies finally arrived. I ordered them so long ago however that I thought I ordered graveyard style bases, but I had ordered street style bases. Heh. At least they were easy and quick to paint. So now I have my third crew completely done.

First Attempt at OSL

Posted by winter on Saturday, February 26. 2011 in Wargaming

So I've had my first attempt at object source lighting (OSL) where you light part of the miniature as though something on or near them is casting the light. It is pretty might highlighting using a light source on the miniature rather than an imagined light source.

Ramos is the model that I've done it on as he is the first model with an obviously visible light source. Though just as I've typed that I look down and see Papa Loco and realise I could try something similar with his lit dynamite stick.

Malifaux - Painting Update

Posted by winter on Friday, February 25. 2011 in Wargaming

I've been slack with posting this week (not sure if the regular 5 or so (heh) readers prefer daily posts or bigger posts), but I've thankfully kept up the painting.

I managed to finish off the Seamus crew and have started in on the Ramos crew. Once I get the Ramos crew done I will have 4 crews done and the lads will be forced into playing with me!

Malifaux - Unit Review - Ronin

Posted by winter on Monday, February 21. 2011 in Wargaming

Now that I've had a couple of games with them and had a bit of a think about how to use them, I thought I'd start to review some of the models in my Outcasts crew.

First up will be the Ronin.
